Australian Solidarity
In November 2005 an estimated 500,000 people rallied all across Australia to oppose the Howard government's WorkChoices legislation. Here in New Zealand, there were rallies in support in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.
Despite massive opposition from communities, churches and unions, the legislation came into force in March this year.
Unions in Australian are rallying again in their second national day of action, on June 28 2006. Here in New Zealand, we are taking action in support of Australian workers, and their right to a fair go on the job. Unions are also highlighting a plan from the National Party to do away with rights at work for the first 90 days on the job, through their Bill currently before parliament.
