CTU Condemns US Wharf Workers Lockout

The NZ Council of Trade Unions joined New Zealand maritime unions today in condemning the lockout of longshore workers on the West Coast of the USA."The irresponsible action of the employer in locking these workers out which can only make resolution of the dispute more difficult," said CTU secretary Paul Goulter today.

US employer group PMA shut the gates on their workforce over the weekend and announced they would keep them locked out again this morning after a work contract negotiations stalled again last week.

Paul Goulter said union members had shown their commitment to a resolution by resolving to turn up to work, whether they are paid or not.

"There will be tremendous support internationally, and an international campaign is coming together now," he said.

"The CTU joins New Zealand's maritime unions in calling on the employer group, Pacific Maritime Association, to return to negotiations."

A joint delegation of rank and file New Zealand Waterfront Workers and Seafarers will join Australian union members on picket lines in the US next week.

Paul Goulter said the CTU had discussed the issue with the Australian Council of Trade Unions to coordinate action.
