Labour Day Reminder of Work/Life Balance
"Today's day off for many workers is a reminder that workers need to balance the demands of work against the need for rest and recreation, and time with family and friends," Council of Trade Unions secretary Paul Goulter said today."On the first Labour Day, over 100 years ago, trade union members marched to celebrate winning the 8 hour day," he said.
"Today the 8 hour day and other family-friendly working conditions are a dim memory for many and workers are saying 'we want to get a life again'."
Paul Goulter said a CTU research project has shown that workers are tired of struggling with the conflict between work and family responsibilities and the demands of work that leave no time for a quality of life.
The first results of the project were released in July and the final document will be published before the end of 2002.
When the project is complete a CTU co-ordinated campaign will focus on what legislation and what union members need in their collective agreements to achieve some balance.
Paul Goulter said campaign goals would include paid parental leave, adequate holidays, the right to quality part time work, and healthy, safe workplaces.
"We need to address the big issues that prevent workers from playing their part in their families and communities," he said.
