Audit Shows NZ Workers Rights Lag Behind

"A new report released by the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions shows New Zealand still does not meet international minimum human rights for workers," Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said today.

The ICFTU international assessment was released in Brussels to coincide with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) review of New Zealand's trade policy.

"The CTU shares the ICFTU assessment that the Employment Relations Act is weak on the promotion of collective bargaining," Ross Wilson said

"While acknowledging that the ERA is a big step forward for workers' rights from the Employment Contracts Act the ICFTU criticises the ERA for being weak in promotion of collective bargaining and the right to strike."

Ross Wilson said the CTU had raised both issues with Government as part of the review of the Employment Relations Act.
