Waiuku Plant Operator Takes Out Health and Safety Award
A plant operator and EPMU member at New Zealand Steel in Waiuku has won this year’s ‘Most Influential Employee Award’ at the annual Safeguard Workplace Health and Safety Awards.
The CTU sponsored category recognises an employee or elected health and safety representative who has acted as a champion of health and safety and who has had a significant positive influence on the health and safety culture of his or her organisation.
Ricky Dunstan has been a union delegate and OHS rep at the NZ Steel Pipe Plant for a number of years. CTU Health and Safety Organiser Karen Fletcher said he has always had an interest in health and safety.

Award winner Ricky Dunstan, |
“He has earned himself a reputation as being a ‘dog with a bone’ when working through issues that need resolving. His manager says the health and safety improvements wouldn’t have happened so quickly if it hadn’t been for Ricky’s persistence.”
Ricky has been instrumental in having a comprehensive ventilation system installed to improve air quality in the plant, and has also worked with management to provide a better standard of protective equipment for workers, she said. His concerns about the quality of drinking water at the plant also saw significant improvements in this area.
“We are delighted for Ricky”, said Fritz Drissner, Health and Safety Officer for the EPMU, Ricky’s union. “Ricky deserves to be acknowledged for years of hard work and dedication to his mates.”
Jan Dunn of Christchurch was also a finalist in the category. Jan is a PSA Health and Safety Rep at the Ministry of Social Development, and has been the staff OHS representative for eight years.
Health and Safety Council
Meanwhile, a new union, employer and government leadership group on health and safety has been established.
The Workplace Health and Safety Council will provide advice to government on health and safety legislation, standards and policies, and on ways to progress the implementation of the Workplace Health and Safety Strategy, initiated in June 2005.
Union representation on the Council includes CTU secretary Carol Beaumont and finsec General Secretary Andrew Casidy, and the CTU president also holds a position ex-oficio, in a rotating Chair basis with the Business New Zealand CEO and the Minister of Labour. Employers are represented by Paul Jarvie from the Employer and Manufacturers Association (Northern) and barrister and consultant Panu Raea.
CTU president Ross Wilson said that the strategy and Council needed to be backed up by action at all levels.
“There are many reasons why unions must organise around health and safety, not least of which is the massive toll that workplace injuries, accidents and illness takes on workers.
“We know that the costs of workplace disease and injury are born largely by injured workers and their families, and this is backed up by the 2006 NOHSAC report which estimated the full cost of occupational disease and injury to be $20.9 billion annually, and that only 2% of these total costs are compensated by government agencies such as ACC and Work & Income.”
As reported in last week’s Unionist, the CTU is launching stage three of the Health and Safety Rep training programme during May with events in Auckland, Hamilton, Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington. The CTU/ACC joint venture has been running for four years and has seen more than 15,000 reps trained.

Clean Start international day of action Tuesday 15 May.
In Auckland cleaners will be demonstrating outside the AA building on Albert St at 12 noon.
Multinational cleaning firm ISS, who have more than 400,000 staff worldwide, hold a cleaning contract at the AA building. Despite agreements made internationally, ISS in New Zealand refuses to be a responsible contractor and treat cleaners fairly. Cleaners are asking “why are we treated differently in NZ”?
Cleaners will also be supporting EPMU members who are AA call centre workers currently in negotiations with the company.
Both the cleaners and call centre workers are calling for their companies to treat them with respect
