Unions meet about earthquake 13.9.10

Union officials in Canterbury met today to discuss the impact of the earthquake on workers and their jobs.

CTU President Helen Kelly and CTU Secretary Peter Conway attended the meeting at which representatives of the Department of Labour and Ministry of Social Development also advised officials about financial assistance and employment queries.

Helen Kelly said the CTU has appointed an earthquake recovery coordinator Marty Braithwaite. Union officials raised a number of concerns that workers were expressing including reduced work hours, the need for extra leave, stress-related issues and ongoing accommodation problems. The meeting also discussed skills development issues during the recovery.

Union officials have agreed to set up services to provide advice to workers with employment issues arising from the quake.
