Canterbury Earthquake
Our sympathy and support go out to the people of Canterbury after the devastating earthquake on 22nd February and continuing aftershocks. The huge loss of life, injuries and ongoing rescue attempts for people trapped in buildings are the focus of everyone’s concern right now.
Our thoughts are with those who are waiting to hear news about people who are missing or already know they have died. We also acknowledge the tremendous effort from emergency workers in many agencies who are working incredibly hard to rescue people, treat injuries and provide countless other forms of support.
Union offices in Canterbury are also affected and there is major structural damage to the Trade Union Centre in Armagh Street. Union officials are contacting delegates, following up on reports about members who are missing, and providing advice and assistance to people. But like others in Canterbury they are also dealing with the impact on their families, friends and property and community.
There are many effects from this latest tragedy. As we know from the September quake and aftershocks, one of those is disruption to normal work. We have been in touch with Business NZ and Ministry of Social Development to discuss issues such as job losses, engineering inspection of worksites, pay for people off work, welfare assistance, civil defence payments, counselling and other matters. In the aftermath of the September earthquake and aftershocks we established union coordination and support for workers needing assistance.
At this time the priority has to be saving lives and supporting those who are have lost loved ones.
