Peter Conway, CTU Secretary, said: “While we welcome extra university places, the Government is funding this by removing $55 million from industry training.”

CTU supports calls for trucking enquiry

The CTU supports an inquiry by the Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee into the working conditions of truck drivers.

A recent article in the Sunday Star Times reported that truck drivers routinely fall asleep behind the wheel, drive up to 100 hours a week, don't take any breaks and scrimp on maintenance.

Though the Minister of Finance says we have “been through the worst”, the Government’s Half Year Economic and Fiscal Update forecasts unemployment rising to 7 percent in the next 3 months, falling only marginally (to 6.9 percent) in 2011 and still at 6.0 percent in 2012, said CTU Economist and Policy Director Bill Rosenberg.

The CTU has criticised today’s Budget for not doing enough to stimulate the jobs market and invest in skills.

Peter Conway, CTU Secretary, said: “This was always going to be a tough Budget requiring difficult choices. But the Government could have done more in the short run to boost employment and has actually reduced planned funding on industry training.”
