    A graph showing the share of income that the richest 1% of people in New Zealand have received over the last 90 years together with union membership over that period gives a clear picture. Income inequality has risen when union membership has been falling, and inequality has fallen when union membership has been strong.

    In her opening speech to the CTU Biennial Conference - Workers Rights in the 21st Century - President, Helen Kelly highlighted the importance of workers’ rights in order to address inequality and promote fairness.

    Helen Kelly issued a message to unions "our challenge is not just to fight for improvements in workers’ rights, but in the process to build and innovate from what we have.

  • Government Promotes Low Wage Vision

    The CTU has strongly criticised comments by Deputy Prime Minister Bill English that New Zealand has a competitive advantage in attracting overseas investment because our wages are 30 percent cheaper than in Australia.

    Peter Conway, CTU Secretary said ‘this contrasts strongly with the stated aim of Government to close the wage gap with Australia”.

    The Government’s claims about the flow-on impact of the Court of Appeal decision on sleepover shifts worked by disability support workers were tested in court and were found to be wrong, said the CTU today.

    CTU President Helen Kelly said: “It is time the Government faced up to the fact that disability support workers have been grossly underpaid for years.

  • Wage increases do not match price rises

    The CTU says that the increase of 1.7 per cent in wages for last year falls far short of price increases of 4 percent.

    Peter Conway, CTU Secretary, said: “The main reasons for wage increases cited in the Statistics NZ release were due to the cost of living and the incidence of collective bargaining by unions.

  • Government loses plot on supporting Kiwi jobs

    Two announcements today show the Government missing two opportunities to preserve and build good Kiwi jobs, said the CTU. More Kiwirail rolling stock is being manufactured overseas, and the management of two Auckland prisons is being privatised, with likely job and income losses.

    Kiwirail has announced that a $29 million tender for 300 rail wagons has gone to China CNR Corporation.

    Median weekly incomes have stagnated in dollar terms since 2008, which means they have fallen over 4 percent in real terms (that is, after price rises have been taken into account), said the CTU today.
