    Today’s Statistics NZ figures showing unemployment at 6.4 percent is a welcome step in the right direction but the improvement is neither fast enough nor substantial enough, said the CTU.

    Unemployment has jumped significantly according to the latest release from Statistics NZ who describe the labour market as ‘volatile’. The figure of 6.8% shows that the recession is not over for many. There are 159,000 unemployed, or 255,700 jobless.

    The CTU has deplored the Government’s removal of the minimum wage protection for workers on the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) scheme. Allowing employers to make deductions which will reduce pay rates below the minimum of $12.50 per hour will significantly increase exploitation of RSE workers and undermine the credibility of the scheme, said CTU Vice-President Richard Wagstaff.

    The CTU says that although unemployment at 5 percent, or 115,000 people, is less than many had forecast at this time, there are some worrying trends in the figures.

    Youth unemployment is at 19.6 percent, for those aged 20-24 years it is 12 percent, Maori unemployment is 11.9 percent and Pacific peoples at 13.1 percent.
