This comparison includes policy from the following parties: Mana, Greens, Labour, Maori,

Mana

  • Abolish GST.
  • Abandon the market-based provision of essential services such as electricity and water in favour of non-profit and sustainable provision of those services.
  • Regulate loan sharks and restrict banks’ profit margins on loans, credit cards, and mortgages.
  • Provide a one-off hardship grant of $1,000 for every person aged 18 and over who is on an income of $30,000 or less, whether they are on a benefit or in paid work, to be paid by Christmas 2011.

Greens

  • Establish a supermarket code of conduct and ombudsman to ensure fair competition in the supermarket industry.
  • Introduce progressive energy pricing for consumers to alleviate energy poverty and incentivise energy conservation.

Labour

  • No GST on fruit and vegetables.

Maori

  • Exempt all food from GST. 
  • Remove tax from prescription medicines and investigate the viability of green prescriptions.
  • Review adequacy of the accommodation supplement.
  • Enact an annual power rebate for low-income whanau; installation of low-cost heating and insulating in 10,000
