Submission on the Local Government (Port Companies Accountability) Bill

Cover of an NZCTU submission document on the Local Government (Port Companies Accountability) Bill, featuring the NZCTU logo and a red patterned design against a blue background.

The NZCTU supports this Bill which seeks to bring port companies into the same operating environment as other council-controlled organisations.

This change would help ensure that ports, as critical national supply chain infrastructure, operate in an accountable and transparent way.

By bringing port companies into the requirements of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987, the Bill would:

  • Enable local communities to understand how and why decisions made by port companies are made;
  • Promote good employment within ports to support better health and safety and industrial relations; and
  • Support regulatory settings to mitigate the impact of port operations on the environment and to help improve port’s social licence within their local communities.
